A large number of fires that were active on the territory of Montenegro, especially in the first half of August, had a negative impact on air quality. Based on the results shown on the portal of the state network for air quality monitoring, in the period from August 1 to 17, during 10 days, the limit value for the daily concentration of PM 10 particles was recorded, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (Source CDM).
Master thesis: Hybrid Solar Powered Data Center at UDG
An interesting Master thesis defense took place on July 1, 2021. Mr. Vladimir Toskovic defended his thesis titled “Hybrid Solar Powered Data Center” covering the topics of feasibility analysis and design of a hybrid solar powered data center at the UDG. The thesis included calculations, capacity assessment and equipment selection. The feasibility analysis includes the current numbers of power consumption at UDG and projections should the data center at UDG is implemented. During his thesis work, mr Toskovic published and presented two scientific papers at international conferences. The presentation of his master thesis ended with a slogan “UDG without planet consumption!”.

The following charts summarizes CAQI data currently being collected with EKONET system implemented within the ECOMON project. The charts depicts the Common Air Quality Indices calculated from the sensor data obtained at three locations (Podgorica, Nikšić, and UDG site). You can click on the speaker icon to hear the music corresponding to the current CAQI value for the location. Please check the following page link.
Air Quality Monitoring in Podgorica (Delta)
Researchers from ECOMON project have continued installing the field equipment for ecological monitoring. The third air quality IoT sensor node has been installed in Podgorica (Delta vicinity) for monitoring air quality parameters and AQI parameters. The device is connected to a real-time Cloud platform and it is continuously collecting the data for that part of the city.
Monitoring of air quality in Niksic
Researchers from ECOMON project have installed a sensor node in Niksic for monitoring of air quality parameters. We initiated a collaboration with Tehnopolis Centre and installed the sensor node at their building to monitor the air quality parameters and AQI indices for downtown Niksic. The node is connected to a real-time Cloud platform and we hope to collect the air quality data for at least one full year.
Project presentation at MECO2021 conference
In the period from June 7 to 10, 2021, in Budva, the 10th jubilee, Mediterranean Conference on Embedded Computer Systems, known as MECO, was held.
The ECOMON project, which is being implemented at the University of Donja Gorica, was presented at the conference. The project is funded by the EU. The goal of the project is the implementation of sensor nodes whose task is to measure air parameters, as well as to measure parameters that affect water quality. During the project, a laboratory was created in the Premium premises of the University, which will be used for further research work.
Student paper at MECO 2021 conference
In the period from June 7 to 10, 2021, in Budva, the 10th jubilee, Mediterranean Conference on Embedded Computer Systems, known as MECO, was held, with associated workshops and a summer school. This year, MECO gathered over 650 authors from over 50 countries.
One of the conference papers at MECO comes from students at the University of Donja Gorica. Strahinja Jakić and Ivan Konatar presented a conference paper on the topic: “Real-Time Measurement and Analysis of Air and Water Parameters on the Territory of Montenegro”.
The conference paper is a result of the ECOMON project which is being realized at the University. Due to epidemiological measures, the conference was held in a combined regime. Our students presented their work ONLINE. Learn more about MECO2021 at the following link.
ABSTRACT— This paper describes systems whose primary role is a measurement, display, and analysis of data based on the Internet of Things, with a focus on environmental parameters that directly affect the environment. Having in mind that Montenegro is an ecological state, it is necessary to justify its ecological status by investing in the development and preservation of the environment by applying modern technologies. Therefore, the paper points to the complexity and multidisciplinary between ecology and computer science.
World Oceans Day
More than 70% of the world’s surface is covered with seas and oceans. On World Oceans Day, let’s name a few actions the EU is taking to protect their invaluable ecosystems and biodiversity (source EC):
- Plastics Strategy → banning from single-use plastic products from sales in the EU by 3 July.
- Blue Economy → moving towards a sustainable blue economy to protect our marine life and achieve climate neutrality.
- EU Biodiversity → establishing protected areas for at least 30% of Europe’s seas by 2030.
- Zero Pollution → reducing the plastic waste in our oceans by 50% and microplastics by 30% by 2030.
CFCU Visit to UDG
On May 31, the CFCU organized a regular monitoring visit, which is planned after the first year of project implementation. The visit took place in a great atmosphere and with constructive talks and exchange of opinions. In addition to the planned control of the complete project documentation, the representatives of the Ministry of Finance were presented with the results and activities on the project so far. The sensor nodes and the ECOMON project platform were presented, on which the readings and analysis of the measured parameters are performed. There are two types of measuring stations within the project, and these are stations for measuring air parameters, as well as stations for measuring parameters that affect water quality. One of the sensor nodes is placed in front of the University of Donja Gorica and refers to the measurement of air parameters. Other sensor nodes will be implemented in the coming period in several cities of Montenegro, where it will be important to monitor these parameters.
Field lab installation at UDG
Researchers from ECOMON project have started installing the field equipment for ecological monitoring. The first air quality IoT node has been installed at the UDG building for monitoring air quality parameters and AQI indices. The device is connected to a real-time Cloud platform.
